Paul Dando, 59, of Kewstoke, Weston-super-Mare, beat 5,000 entrants to win the £1,200 dream trip for two to New York. However, because he and his wife could not bear to leave their pet horse at home, they have turned down the trip of a lifetime to America. Mr Dando, who runs a smallholding with his wife Tina, explained their dilemma to Mr Burrough of William Stewart who then agreed to give them the money instead. Mr Dando said: "When I won I thought 'great' and then there was this logistical nightmare. We've bred award-winning Highland ponies for 22 years and have 10, along with 25 chickens, two turkeys, a dog and two cats." Mrs Dando said: "I didn't want to leave the animals and as I live in jodhpurs and riding boots I won't miss shopping, so we are going to spend the money on our horses instead." Mr Burrough said he was happy to hand over the cash equivalent for the trip, as he too is reluctant to leave his dog when the family go on holiday. Mr Burrough, of Lympsham, said: "I completely understood how Paul felt because we have a dog that won't eat in kennels. We even bought a motor home so the dog could be included on holiday. It's been a great competition for all our customers, with monthly prizes from meals and flowers to chocolates and New York."
